Tight bouts opened the 43rd Gee Bee Tournament in Helsinki
The new 43rd edition of the Gee Bee Tournament opened with 23 contests in Finland’s capital in Helsinki.
France’s Melissa Bounoua won the first bout of the entire Gee Bee Tournament against Germany’s Tatjana Obermeier. Her teammate, Lisa Nouicer also outpointed her opponent, Australia’s Shelby-Lee Wintle at the women’s 65kg weight class.
Australia’s Yusuf Chothia and Scotland’s Aaron Cullen met in a crucial battle at the men’s 55kg weight class and the first exceeded his previous level of boxing. The Paris Olympian shocked the younger Scotsman with his strength and the referee stopped their battle in the third round, confirming Chothia’s RSC triumph.
Another Australian, the 19-year-old tall Jacob Cassar, proved his impressive talent in one of his first elite competitions. As a junior and youth boxer, Cassar was almost unbeaten, and he opened the Gee Bee in style against Sweden’s Alvin Warukaga.
France’s Sandro Spica was also born in 2006 as Jacob Cassar and he is a promising talent but Finland’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament competitor Ismail Umar had the routine to win their 65kg weight class bout in Helsinki.
Chinese Taipei’s two-time Olympian Lai Chu En had a hard opponent as first, Germany’s Ousainou Hansen but his technical skills were enough to win their contest by 3:2 split decision.
Finland’s next generation boxers in the men’s team such as Dmitri Kataja (65kg) and Jimi Noioso (70kg), both opened their campaigns successfully in Helsinki over Australian and Swiss rivals.
Sweden’s technician Kevin Scott won his first 70kg bout against a local opponent while Netherlands’ Finn Bos also managed his first success in Helsinki. Denmark’s Silas Yde (80kg) and Norway’s Paris Olympian Omar Shiha (+90kg) both won hard contests in the opening session of the competition.
