Umar, Lai, Noioso, Kataja and Bos all won their second contests at the Gee Bee Tournament
Ismail Umar, Lai Chu En, Jimi Noioso, Finn Bos and Dmitri Kataja all won their second contests at the 43rd edition of the Gee Bee Tournament in Helsinki.
Finland’s European bronze medallist Emma Jokiaho is another favourite at the women’s 54kg but she accomplished her goal in her quarter-final against Denmark’s Emma Jensen, a younger talent from the Nordic region.
Australia’s 19-year-old Jacob Cassar opened his campaign with a success in Helsinki but he was defeated by Germany’s Mohamed Siala at the men’s 60kg weight class. His teammate, Jack Carlson was succeeded in the quarter-finals, he eliminated Lithuania’s Mykolas Brokas in a hectic bout.
England’s William Hewitt also had a crucial battle at the men’s 60kg but three out of the five judges favoured him against Scotland’s Isa Akram. Netherlands’ King of the Ring winner Mahmoud Al-Chabtoun had also a 3:2 triumph over Switzerland’s Andy Nahom and he is a guaranteed medallist in Helsinki.
Finland’s Ismail Umar had a tough opener in Helsinki but he proved a much better performance as next against Denmark’s Qalid Osman. Chinese Taipei’s two-time Olympian Lai Chu En had a clear pathway to the medal phase against a local boxer, Juho Taipale.
Finland’s youngsters as Dmitri Kataja and Jimi Noioso both had split decision successes in the day of the quarter-finals. The first eliminated Norway’s Alkhazur Magomedov, the second defeated Denmark’s Kouc Mayuom at the 70kg.
The favourites of the 70kg weight class such as Germany’s Chukwuka Okah-Ezeokeke, Sweden’s Kevin Scott and Netherlands’ Finn Bos all were energetic in their contests. France’s Hassana El Qadmi, England’s Kyle Shaw-Tullin, Denmark’s Kasper Walton and Australia’s teenager, Linkyn MacMillan are the medallists at the 75kg.
