Ireland’s Rathi Abuladze knocked out his youth final opponent in Portimao

Ireland’s Rathi Abuladze won his youth final by knockout in the Portimao Box Cup today afternoon in Portugal’s top event.

Following Joao Negrita’s heroic success at the schoolboys 38kg weight class, two Irish boxers as Conor Dowds and Hughie Lee Nevin captured the show in the final of the junior light middleweight (70kg). Dowds competed in several Irish national events successfully and he earned an international title in Portimao.

Portugal’s Rhenan Silva won the first youth title in Portimao, he defeated France’s Lenny Abis at the bantamweight (54kg) final.

France’s Farid Thalhaoui had the strong footwork in his minimumweight (48kg) final but Ireland’s Tommy Fitzpatrick worked enough to win the gold medal. Another French youth boxer, Leo Bequet had a tight victory over Liam Dobie at the light welterweight (63.5kg).

Another two Irish youth boxers joined the finals of the middleweight (75kg) in Portimao where Rathi Abuladze used his longer reach to land his powerful jabs against Zach O’Hara. The Georgian-descent boxer finished the job with a heavy knockout in the second round, proving his strength once again.

Luxembourg’s Armin Skrijelj is not so experienced in the international stage yet but he stopped his final opponent, Aaron Carrasco at the youth light heavyweight (80kg) while a local boxer, Kyrylo Sokolvak also won a youth gold medal today.

France’s Amine El Asri and England’s Boyd Chapman had a crucial youth cruiserweight (86kg) final in Portimao and the latter bagged the belt and the gold medal with a close 2:1 split decision.

Switzerland’s Jules Perritaz stopped his final opponent in the youth age group and he claimed a title but England’s Leroy Alfred, Bradley Khan, and Spain’s duo as Antonio Canestro and Andres Salazar also impressed in the day of the finals.
