Usik, Melkumian, Diallo and Costa impressed in the elite finals in Portimao

The Portimao Box Cup opened with its first session in five rings at the Arena Portimao where the junior, youth and elite began their campaigns.

Spain’s Jose Pantoja is a well-known name in the international stage, his elder brother is a European Youth medallist. The younger Pantoja dominated the exchanges against Fallou Niong and he knocked down his rival in the first round and he finished the job in the third with another heavy shot.

Portugal’s Hugo Costa and England’s Spencer Poole both had amazing victories during their roads to the final of the elite light middleweight (71kg). The local boxer gave in everything in the third round to make the crowd proud and he earned a gold medal in Portimao.

Luxembourg’s Benik Melkumian worked hard in the recent years and the experienced lightweight (60kg) boxer ruled the middle of the ring against Portugal’s Igor Lopes. The boxer from Luxembourg turned up the heat in the second round and his strength was decisive in their final bout.

Portugal’s Elton Tavares had a tough semi-final and he expected another real battle in the final against France’s Axel Touty Hourani. The Portuguese light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer moved a lot on feet to find the best counter-attacking angles and he won a close final.

France’s Boubacar Diallo used the same strategy in the final against England’s Lewis Scutt how he has done in in the semi-finals. The returning French light heavyweight (80kg) boxer was patient with the counter-attacks and his effective punches guaranteed a gold medal for him today.

Spain’s Eduard Usik had a serious KO victory in the semi-finals but he expected a different experience against Portugal’s Armenio Reis in the final of the featherweight (57kg). Reis was not able to keep Usik’s rhythm and his ringside abandoned the final.
