Donaire wins WBA Interim bantamweight title
Former four-division world champion, Nonito Donaire (43-8, 28 KOs) put himself in position to fight again for a world title.
42-year-old on Saturday night in Buenos Aires, Argentina defeated Andres Campos (17-3-1) of Chile and won the WBA Interim World bantamweight title.
Fight was stopped on round nine due to cut in right eyebrow of Donaire, cause by accidental clash of heads.
Referee ordered to go to scorecards and until round eight Donaire was ahead on points on cards of all three judges (88:83, 87:84 and 87:84).
“Sorry that this happened,” Donaire said of the bout ending in such a manner. “I wanted to show my fighting heart and warrior spirit to the people of Argentina.
“Next time, I will give it all and do my best. Today, this is my victory and also Argentina’s victory for this opportunity.”
