Lundaa, Putilov and the Kazakhs shined in Astana
Mongolia’s Gantumur Lundaa’s KO, Germany’s Nikita Putilov’s success and the host nation’s triumphs delighted the crowd at the Astana World Boxing Cup.
Finland’s Pihla Kaivo-Oja continued her winning path in Astana and she became a finalist against France’s Wassila Lkhadiri. Following her split decision success, she will be boxing for the title with Kazakhstan’s Alua Balkybekova who eliminated her Brazilian rival.
Brazil’s Rebeca Santos replaced their former star Beatriz Ferreira in the national team and she worked hard in her semi-final against England’s Lucy Kings-Wheatley to join the final where her next opponent will be Kazakhstan’s Asian Champion Viktoriya Grafeyeva.
Kazakhstan’s Natalya Bogdanova outpointed the big puncher opponent, Nigeria’s UK-based Patricia Mbata and she won all of the three rounds on the judges’ scorecards, which means that she will now face Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti in the 70kg final.
Kazakhstan’s Makhmud Sabyrkhan, the World Champion and the reigning Asian Champion, looked confident from the first seconds against Dominican Republic’s Junior Alcantara and he will now face Japan’s Rui Yamaguchi for the gold medal.
Mongolia’s Gantumur Lundaa was excellent in the previous stages at the men’s 60kg weight class, he knocked out his opponent, Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto in the semi-finals, and he will be boxing with Brazil’s No.1, Luiz Gabriel Oliveira for the gold.
Germany’s European U22 Champion Nikita Putilov replaced the Olympic medallist Nelvie Tiafack at the super heavyweight and he became a finalist in Astana after beating India’s veteran Narender Berwal. The 22-year-old German will now meet Kazakhstan’s star Aibek Oralbay for the title of the weight class.
