The President of the Hungarian Boxing Association, the Olympic Champion Mr. Istvan Kovacs is 55 today

The President of the Hungarian Boxing Association, the Olympic, World and European Champion Mr. Istvan “Koko” Kovacs celebrates his 55^th birthday today.

The Hungarian Boxing Association celebrates also its 100^th anniversary today and their management arranged a big project to commemorate worthily the centenarian event.

The Hungarian Boxing Association was established on August 17 in 1925 and their bright history had a wonderful celebration at the Heroes Square in Budapest yesterday.

Hungary attended 23 editions of the boxing events of the Olympic Games until 2024 and the Hungarians are in the Top10 of the overall ranking of the Olympic boxing medal table with 10 impressive titles.

Hungary’s last Olympic boxing champion, Istvan Kovacs was born in Budapest on the 17^th of August in 1970. He began his boxing career as a small child in Budapest’s biggest boxing club at Vasas.

He claimed titles in the 1991 and 1997 World Boxing Championships, 1991 and 1996 European Boxing Championships and a bronze at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games.

His main highlight came at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games where he opened his successful campaign against Turkey’s Soner Karaoz.

Tajikistan’s Khurshed Khasanov was silver medallist in the Tashkent 1995 Asian Boxing Championships but Kovacs was too quick for him in the Round of 16 in Atlanta.

Kovacs had to meet in the quarter-final of the bantamweight with a Romanian boxer, Crinu Raicu Olteanu but his counter-attacks guaranteed his 24:2 triumph.

The Hungarian had a hard job in the semi-finals of the Olympic Games when he faced with Thailand’s Vichairachanon Khadpo but he managed his pathway to the final.

Kovacs was highly confident in the Olympic final against Cuba’s experienced Arnaldo Mesa and claimed Hungary’s 10^th title in the sport’s history.
