Boris Van der Vorst – What an amazing boxing festival it was in Budapest and an unforgettable experience with Koko

The President of World Boxing, Mr. Boris Van der Vorst not only took part to celebrate the Hungarian Boxing Association’s 100^th anniversary tomorrow but he faced in a friendly encounter with the President, the former Olympic Champion Istvan “Koko” Kovacs.  

“What an amazing boxing festival it was in Budapest, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Magyar Ökölvívók Szövetsége /Hungarian Boxing Association.

I had the honour of sharing this special moment with my Hungarian boxing friends and with the President of the Hungarian Boxing Association, 1996 Olympic Champion István Kovács, to congratulate them on this great milestone.

On behalf of World Boxing, I was pleased to thank President Kovács for his dedication to the sport and to present a special award commemorating this historic occasion. Hungary has produced many outstanding champions, and the Olympic-style boxing world should be proud of this true nation of warriors.

It was also a great pleasure for me to share the ring with President Kovács in an exhibition bout, concluding a boxing marathon of 100 fights at Heroes Square.

To be honest, it was not an easy experience to face such a decorated boxer, even if he has not been active for many years. An Olympic gold medallist will always be an Olympic gold medallist. I believe the fans truly enjoyed our performance, and perhaps some of them were even inspired to join a boxing club.

An unforgettable experience to share the ring with an Olympic champion, former world champion in pro boxing, and a great boxing leader, István Kovács.
