Ireland selected 17-strong team to the World Boxing Championships
Ireland will compete with seven female and ten male boxers in the upcoming World Boxing Championships which will be starting in Liverpool on September 4.
Mr. John Mackey, the National Performance Director and the head coach of the team, Mr. Zauri Antia have selected their line-ups for Liverpool.
The Irish female boxers are one of the strongest teams in the entire European continent and several of their medallists, Olympians and veterans joined
The best weapons in the Irish female team are the O’Rourkes from Castlerea BC, the World Champion Lisa (70kg) and the European Champion Aoife (75kg) both are among the gold medals contenders in Liverpool.
Daina Moorehouse (51kg) and Jennifer Lehane (54kg) both succeeded in the qualification events for Paris and they competed in the last Olympics one year ago.
Belfast’s Michaela Walsh is a veteran female national team member, she joined the international stage more than 10 years ago and the Commonwealth Games winner is another medal hope for Ireland at the 57kg.
Zara Breslin (60kg) and the Paris Olympian Grainne Walsh (65kg) are the remaining members of their strong women’s national team.
The 10-strong Irish male team contains medallists from European Championships and Olympians from Paris as well including the promising Dean Clancy (65kg), and the 23-year-old Jack Marley (90kg).
Waterford’s Kelyn Cassidy proved strong progress in the recent one and half year and he could be a surprise at the men’s 80kg weight class in Liverpool.
Galway’s Martin McDonagh is one of the most progressed boxers at the super heavyweight who is aiming for his first main elite medal.
Louis Rooney (50kg), Patsy Joyce (55kg), Adam Hession (60kg), Matthew McCole (70kg), Gavin Rafferty (75kg) and Brian Kennedy (85kg) were also added to the Irish team rooster.
