Belgium’s new team is ready to make surprises in Liverpool
Belgium will compete with a 9-strong team at the upcoming World Boxing Championships which will be starting in Liverpool on September 4.
Mr. Raffaele Bergamasco and Mr. John Warburton are top coaches in the world and they support Belgium’s preparation this year.
Belgium’s historic World bronze medallist and the Paris Olympian Victor Schelstraete is not able to take part in Liverpool due to his injury. The Youth World Championships bronze medallist Noa Hadjit also has an injury and the strong duo has to miss the top event of the year in Liverpool.
Ana Khunjua switched from Georgia to Belgium a few years ago and after her gold medal at the Brussels Capital Tournament, she is ready to make surprises in Liverpool.
Their 60kg female boxer, Chloe Rasquaert will turn to 25 later this year and she will be making her World Championships’ debut next week.
Oshin Derieuw is the top name of the team, the European Games silver medallist and the Paris Olympian is aiming for her first World Championships’ medal in Liverpool.
Rasul Tisayev competed at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships at the age of 17 and he won the Brussels Capital Tournament this April which was his first main achievement among the elite boxers.
Hamza Sriri also won the Brussels Capital Tournament and the 22-year-old boxer progressed a lot at the men’s 75kg weight class.
Idris Leganase put himself into the spotlight when he claimed a silver medal at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament two and half years ago and he will be a strong competitor at the men’s 85kg weight class.
Belgium did not have too many options in the smaller weight categories in the past but Amir Mohammadi (55kg) could be their solution, while Jonathan Oniemba (70kg) and the replacement Oussama El Moussaoui (80kg) also added to the squad.
