Scott and Martinez delivered the surprises of the opener in Liverpool

The World Boxing Championships started with a long competition day in Liverpool where Kevin Scott and Frank Martinez were the surprises of the opener.

Hungary’s 22-year-old Lilla Szeleczki won the opening bout of the championships, she used the long-distance tactics successfully against Hong Kong’s Sandy Lam Hoi Ming at the women’s 48kg weight class.

France’s Christopher Hippocrate defeated Jordan’s Yousef Iashaish at the men’s 55kg and in that weight Sweden’s Paris Olympian Nebil Ibrahim proved a top technical performance against Hungary’s Gabor Virban.

Netherlands’ Finn Bos competed well in the entire season and his progress is significant in all aspects of boxing. After the tactical first round, he stepped into the gas and landed several clear shots to beat Hungary’s ex-Ukrainian Maksym Pylypec.

Chinese Taipei’s Asian Games silver medallist and Paris Olympian Kan Chia Wei opened his campaign at the 70kg with a great performance against Poland’s Pawel Sulecki before Turkmenistan’s Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov and Lithuania’s Aleksandr Trofimcuk won their meetings.

Sweden’s Kevin Scott proved his strong progress and he shocked Cuba’s Jorge Cuellar in the first round which determined the surprise of the 23-year-old Nordic boxer.

Spain’s Frank Martinez was also not the favourite against Ukraine’s 2021 World Champion Yuriy Zakharieiev but he dictated the tempo from the first seconds and he eliminated one of the favourites at the 70kg.

Uzbekistan’s Nigina Uktamova and Kazakhstan’s Elina Bazarova both won Asian titles in several age groups but their meeting delivered a clear success for the Uzbek girl.

Dominican Republic’s Noel Pacheco and Turkey’s Emrah Yasar were the stars of the evening sessions after beating top Irish and Cuban opponents.
