Asian dominance at the men’s 70kg in Liverpool

The Asian boxers dominated the Round of 16 at the men’s 70kg weight class at the World Boxing Championships in Liverpool today.

Turkey’s Hatice Akbas did not underestimate her great Indian opponent, Sakshi Choudhary and she had the full focus in the first round to gain the immediate control and to win their contest at the 54kg.

Chinese Taipei’s Huang Hsiao Wen had a strong opponent, the Olympian Yesugen Oyuntsetseg of Mongolia but she used her longer reach well enough to win this contest unanimously, joining to the last eight at the 54kg.

Uzbekistan’s multiple Asian Champion in various age groups, Nigina Uktamova dictated the tempo against Hungary’s Hanna Lakotar from the first seconds and her aggressive style of boxing guaranteed a spot for the Uzbek in the quarter-finals.

England’s Lauren Mackie is a big talent in their women’s team and the 20-year-old talent opened the first round with great punches against South Korea’s Olympic medallist Im Ae Ji but her Asian opponent was able to make a U-turn in their meeting.

Kazakhstan’s Asian Champion Gulsaya Yerzhan had difficulties in the first round against Lithuania’s Iveta Lesinskyte but she had the great finish to turn back the results while England’s Emily Asquith had the clear success at the 80kg.

Spain’s Frank Martinez had two amazing triumphs in the men’s 70kg weight class and he started well against Uzbekistan’s Shavkatjon Boltayev but the Asian turned back this fight.

Jordan’s Zeyad Eshaish, Kazakhstan’s Torekhan Sabyrkhan, Mongolia’s Byamba-Erdene Otgonbaatar, Kyrgyzstan’s Ikhtiyar Nishonov and Japan’s World Champion Sewon Okazawa proved the Asian power at the 70kg.

Spain’s Emmanuel Reyes is a veteran but the Olympic bronze medallist was fast and sharp in his opener against Croatia’s Zvonimir Rebolj at the 90kg.
