Sandstrom wins WBA Gold title

Per-Ake Persson

Australian-Swedish Linn Sandstrom (12-4-3) won the WBA Gold flyweight title with a very controversial majority decision over Mexican veteran Maribel Ramirez (15-13-4). It was scored an out of line 97-93, 96-94 and 95-95 for a majority win for Sandstrom. Linn Sandstrom fought what might be called a tactical fight which meant that she circled her opponent and tried not to get involved and when Ramirez came close Linn tied her up. As for scoring punches Sandstrom did win a few rounds by flicking out her jab but overall Ramirez dominated the action and should have been the winner.

On the undercard Danish heavyweight Thorbjorn Boudigaard (8-2) tore apart local hero Joel Larsson (4-1-1) and stopped him in the third round. Larsson looked unprepared while Boudigaard looked the opposite.

Super-middle Ajet Jusufi (3-0) stopped John Jeppsson Rudell (0-2) in an all-Swedish matchup. Jusufi was too strong for Rudell and broke through in the third and it was stopped.

The show was promoted by former WBO middleweight champ Armand Krajnc and his Armand Boxing Promotion.

In Norresundby, Denmark on Saturday night

Heavyweight Nicolas Piddubnyy (4-0) knocked out Frenchman Charly Masiya Mbuyi (4-6) in the fifth round of a scheduled eight-rounder. Mbuyi was down in the third but floored the Danish-Ukrainian in the fourth but got caught by a right hand in the fifth and went down and out.
