Ireland and England shined in the Zagreb Boxing Queen

The Zagreb Boxing Queen took place in the Croatian capital in the recent days and the two-days long competition had outstanding finals.

The Zagreb Boxing Queen was a female competition for the elite and the U19 youth boxers in Croatia and            twelve champions earned their gold medals.

Host Croatia, England, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, and Slovenia sent boxers to the Zagreb Boxing Queen.

Ireland’s Kelsey Langan stopped Croatia’s Paola Lacko Plasaj at the youth 57kg final while her teammate, Grace Bailey also succeeded in the U19 age group following her success over Slovenia’s Ema Kladnik.

Croatia has some emerging talents in women’s boxing and their Lucija Skrovec kept the gold medal of the women’s youth 65kg on home soil. The young Croatian had a difficult final against Hungary’s Jazmin Nagy but her hand was raised after the last bell.

The reigning European Champion of the 48kg, Shannon Sweeney moved up to the 51kg weight class this year and the Irish star succeeded against England’s Madi Gittins in the busy final of the Zagreb Boxing Queen.

Ireland’s super talented Chloe Gabriel and England’s Beth Walsh had a fantastic final bout in Zagreb, the first was able to switch into a higher tempo in time to win the final of the elite bantamweight (54kg) by split decision.

Ireland’s next ace in the team, the European U22 Champion Niamh Fay had a very difficult battle against Hungary’s record-breaking National Champion Szabina Szucs and she could win their 57kg final only by 3:2 split decision.

England’s Lilly Dolling was quarter-finalist at the 2024 European Youth Boxing Championships but the 19-year-old teenager proved her strong progress against Germany’s Julie Woche at the elite 70kg final bout.
