The Olympic medallist Junior Alcantara overwhelmed his final opponent at the Independence Cup
The 44th edition of the Independence Cup was held in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros, in the Dominican Republic where fifteen titles have shared between three top nations.
Santiago de los Caballeros, founded in 1495, is located in the north part of the Dominican Republic and it is famous of its cultural centres, museums, and parks.
Dominican Republic had three qualified boxers to the Paris Olympics and among them Junior Alcantara and Cristian Javier Pinales claimed bronze medals last summer.
The Dominicans earned five gold medals in the competition, while Canada and Australia both bagged four titles in Santiago de los Caballeros.
Canada’s McKenzie Wright won the important women’s flyweight (50kg) final over her teammate, Anne Marcotte and she is in strong position to represent her nation in the major championships in 2025.
Dominican Republic’s Katherine Bera is a new face in the national team but she won the women’s lightweight (60kg) final against Australia’s Eve Bryson.
The Australians competed at the Independence Cup for the very first time and their presence was a strong addition to the success of the event. Their Monique Suraci (54kg) and Lekeisha Pergoliti (75kg) won their weight classes with progressed performance.
The Olympics bronze medallist Junior Alcantara moved up to the featherweight (57kg) and he had a quick final in Santiago de los Caballeros where his opponent abandoned the fight in the first round.
Canada’s Keoma Ali Al-Ahmadieh is a fantastic boxer at the lightweight (60kg) and he had the skills to beat Dominican Republic’s Joan Aguero in the final.
Australia’s Paris Olympian Callum Peters has a strong punching power and he proved that against United States’ Jacob Spence in the men’s middleweight (75kg) final.
