The Abashidze Memorial Tournament will start in Batumi today

The preliminaries of the Abashidze Memorial Tournament will start for the elite men boxers in the tourist city of Batumi, Georgia today.

Batumi is the second largest city of Georgia with the population of 150,000 inhabitants and it is located off the coast of the Black Sea.

Twenty-two contests have been scheduled in the first day of boxing which will follow 26 bouts on June 26 in Batumi.

Altogether 95 strong and experienced boxers are attending in the Abashidze Memorial Tournament in 10 men’s elite weight categories.

Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, Georgia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, and Turkmenistan are the participating nations in the Abashidze Memorial Tournament.

Mr. Steve Nathan of Singapore is the Technical Delegate of the Abashidze Memorial Tournament while Mr. Zurab Tibua of Georgia is the Observer.

Georgia’s best elite male boxers are all attending in the Abashidze Memorial Tournament including the EUBC European Champion Sakhil Alakhverdovi (50kg) as well.

The next generation of the Georgian boxers such as Saba Eremeishvili (60kg), Demuri Kajaia (65kg), Levan Demurovi (65kg), Giorgi Natroshvili (75kg), Samvel Kazaryan (80kg) and Tariel Sharikadze (+90kg) are need to be watched in Batumi.

Turkmenistan sent its top team to the Abashidze Memorial Tournament including their Asian Games bronze medallist Bayramdurdy Nurmuhammedov who earned a title at the recent Nurmagambetov Tournament in Kazakhstan.

Armenia’s Artur Sahakyan (60kg), his European medallist teammates, as Rafayel Hovhannisyan (85kg) and Narek Manasyan (90kg) are all top boxers and will return to the international stage of boxing in Batumi.
