Alcaniz, Shadlinski, Pumphrey and Keremete demonstrated the power of the next generation at the Bocskai Memorial on Day1
The 70th edition of the Bocskai Memorial Tournament opened with 54 preliminary bouts in Debrecen, Hungary where many of the youngsters won their contests.
France’s Paris Olympian Wassila Lkhadiri controlled all of the three rounds against Australia’s Elisha Kumar and she started the event well enough at the 51kg.
Spain’s World Championships bronze medallist Laura Fuertes had a hard Ukrainian opponent, Anhelina Guzyk as first at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament but she landed the better punches to win the fight.
England’s U19 World Champion Alice Pumphrey knew her opponent, Spain’s Noelia Gutierrez and she had the technician performance to win their close meeting. France’s European U22 Champion Romane Moulai stopped her inexperienced Hungarian opponent in this busy 51kg.
Hungary’s Petra Mezei was energetic in the first round against Spain’s 18-year-old Claudia Alcaniz but her rival made a U-turn and eliminated the local girl. Azerbaijan’s Zeynab Rakhimova also had a tight success over Hungary’s Laura Horvath at the 54kg weight class.
Wales’ Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Owain Harris-Allan eliminated Slovakia’s Maksym Bocarov with technician performance but Australia’s Johnny Dale and Netherlands’ Mahmoud Al Chabtoun were also impressive at the 60kg.
Australia’s Gene Keremete used his strength to beat Romania’s young Stefan Bacila at the 65kg which saw also France’s Hugo Grau and Hungary’s Daniel Frank as top performers of the opening day.
Moldova’s European silver medallist Alexandru Paraschiv met Hungary’s European quarter-finalist Rafael Buza in the first preliminary round and he won one of the best contests of the first day in Debrecen.
Azerbaijan’s Abbasgulu Shadlinski is a fantastic talent in our sport and he had the effective counter-attacks to beat Hungary’s returning Robert Cservenka at the 75kg but Serbia’s Almir Memic and the local youngster, Balazs Kiraly also shined in this weight.
